Data Analytics with Generative AI: Research Power for Every Orthodontist

When you think of Generative AI, the first thing that probably comes to mind is ChatGPT, a chatbot that can help generate content, drive creativity, and improve productivity by writing, summarizing, and translating. But Generative AI, powered by large language models, is multimodal. It doesn't just work with text; it can also handle numbers, images, videos, and even audios. Today, let's focus on numbers.

We orthodontists work with numbers every day, whether for diagnosis, treatment planning, or clinical monitoring. Craniofacial measurements, tooth movement rates, tooth size discrepancies, force systems, clinical protocols and the list goes on. It might not be immediately obvious, but orthodontics is heavily data-driven, and here, Generative AI can be a game-changer.

For young professionals who may not realize it, embracing data analytics can be very transformative with valuable impact in your clinical career. By gaining expertise in data analysis, we can enhance our ability to optimize treatments, perform simulations, and predict outcomes, all crucial skills for the modern orthodontist. With these capabilities, professionals can achieve greater predictability, efficiency, and success in their treatments.

Generative AI's power extends beyond just AI language, in my opinion the caviar is to allow real-time data manipulation and analysis, making AI-trained orthodontists more critical. This is huge. Some AI models today can provide instant feedback on any data, whether it's small samples from your practice or a large dataset. This lets you explore and test different hypotheses without relying on the biases of authors or companies.

AI is like having a personal data analyst, and you don't need to be a data scientist to benefit from it. It can help you draw your own conclusions, improve your results, and make a significant impact on your development as an orthodontist, as well as your practice and business. Below, I've listed a few opportunities to enhance your analytical skills and master orthodontic data:

  1. Data Cleanup and Formatting: You can upload images, Excel spreadsheets, or PDFs and use AI to reformat the data as you need—organizing it in tables and extracting content to turn unstructured data into structured, without any third part support. You will have a ready-to-use information for machine learning models or statistical analysis if you want to progress with a paper or investigations.

  2. Pattern Analysis: This is powerful for finding key insights, trends, and patterns in patient samples or treatment protocols. You can upload files and use simple prompts to analyze the content, identify major trends, and create charts, with the AI helping explain the findings.

  3. Creating Graphics and Quizzes from Data: Visual representations make complex data easier to digest. With AI, you can prompt the model to create clear, visually appealing graphs that highlight key insights. Additionally, you can turn articles or presentations into quizzes with questions and answers to help with assessments.

  4. Significance Tests and Correlations: Fine-tuned models can run statistical tests on various files and spreadsheets, such as t-tests, chi-square tests, or multivariate analyses. You can also ask for explanations, create clinical insights from the results, extract data, and retest different hypotheses.

  5. Transforming Data into a Story: For clinicians and educators, storytelling is an essential skill. Orthodontists can turn complex diagnostics, treatment plans, or research into easy-to-understand documents, charts, images, videos, or audios, making communication more effective.

Takeaway

Data analytics powered by Generative AI is reshaping how we, as orthodontists, interact with and analyze data. With advanced affordable AI tools, we can easily clean up data, analyze trends, and create compelling visualizations—all through simple prompts. Generative AI makes data science accessible to everyone, providing orthodontists with the tools of a skilled analyst without the complexity. The time-saving benefits and ability to generate actionable insights are enormous for both professionals and businesses.
